Destination Queyras: Do not miss Fort Queyras
Ancient fortified castle dating from the second half of the 13th century, it was listed, on November 29, 1948, on the inventory of historical monuments.
Located in the Hautes-Alpes department and built on top of a rocky peak, it served to block the Guil valley, situated at the border of the Hautes-Alpes and Italy. Indeed, this castle played a strategic role: it protected the Haut-Dauphiné against Savoyard and Provençal invasions while monitoring the Escarton of Queyras, a collection of mountain territories now divided between the Hautes-Alpes and the Italian provinces of Turin and Coni.
Moreover, in the second half of the 16th century, the castle fell victim to the Wars of Religion. During this period, it also served as a prison, notably for "witches" awaiting the stake.
In 1695, it suffered an attack by the Savoyards, leading to the partial destruction of the village. Later, the castle was disarmed between 1940 and 1944, before being returned to civilian life in 1967.
Today, it belongs to private owners, but it remains open to visitors, allowing everyone to discover this fascinating witness of history.
