Destination Queyras: Don't miss Fort Queyras
Ancient fortified castle dating from the second half of the 13th century, it was registered, on November 29, 1948, on the inventory of historical monuments.
Located in the department of Hautes-Alpes and built at the top of a rocky peak, it was used to block the Guil valley, situated at the borders of the Hautes-Alpes and Italy. Indeed, this castle played a strategic role: it protected the Haut-Dauphiné against Savoyard and Provencal invasions while monitoring the Queyras Escarton, a group of mountain territories now divided between the Hautes-Alpes and the Italian provinces of Turin and Cuneo.
Moreover, in the second half of the 16th century, the castle fell prey to the Wars of Religion. During this period, it also served as a prison, notably for "witches" awaiting the stake.
In 1695, it suffered an attack by the Savoyards, leading to the partial destruction of the village. Later, the castle was disarmed between 1940 and 1944, before being returned to civilian life in 1967.
Today, it belongs to private owners, but it remains open to visitors, allowing everyone to discover this fascinating witness of history.
